- Chortens Tibetan Mastiffs
"Chortens" is one of the first dedicated Tibetan Mastiff kennels in the UK.
We had our first TM in 1986. She was Kaya and one of the first to be born in the UK, bred by Bruce Birks, from the American imports of Pauline Brigden. We later acquired our foundation stud dog, Major, who came from the famous French kennels 'de la Tour Chandos' of Marie-Madeleine Kerherve. From these two dogs our kennels were born.
Our first litter was Ben and Linka, who went on to be the top winning TMs in the UK. Liingka was Best of Breed at the National Working Breeds Champ show for 5 successive years and 6 years in total. Following his triumph as Best of Breed at Crufts in 1992 and being featured on the BBC tv programmes on the show, Ben went to live in France, becoming a Champion in three coutntries within the first six months and made up to World Champion in 1994, under judge Christofer Habig. Ben is the only UK bred TM to be made up to World Champion and he was used extensively at stud on the continent. Through him and his son Jhelum, who we imported back to the UK in 1995 descend almost all the Tibetan Mastiffs in the UK today.
Ben and his son Jampa were the inspiration for the superb 'Guardian of Tibet' statuette made by Patsi-Ann and the original photo which was the inspiration for the the bronze is shown here.
Our philosophy has always been that we will not breed unless we are as sure as we can be that we will be breeding good examples of the Tibetan Mastiff, in both type and temperament. With us you can be assured of a quality dog.
